German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam saved 9 of 15 break points while posting a 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 upset of top-seeded Emma Raducanu in the second round of the Zavarovalnica Sava Portoroz in Slovenia.
Friedsam, 28, won the final three games of the third set to finish off the upset of the 2021 U.S. Open champion. Raducanu, a 19-year-old Brit, saved just two of seven break points while losing to a player ranked No. 95 in the world.
In other matches, France’s Diane Perry beat Russian Anastasia Potapova 7-6 (2), 6-4; Czech Katerina Siniakova beat Brit Jodie Burrage 7-5, 6-1, and Italy’s Jasmine Paolini edged Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Chennai Open
Nadia Podoroska of Argentina saved six of eight break points while outlasting Germany’s Tatjana Maria 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) in second-round play in India.
The fourth-seeded Maria held a 4-0 lead in the third-set tiebreaker. But Podoroska won six of the next seven points to take the lead en route to winning the match.
In other matches, second-seeded Russian Varvara Gracheva swept Canada’s Carol Zhao 6-1, 7-5; third-seeded Magda Linette of Poland was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Russian Oksana Selekhmeteva, and Katie Swan of Great Britain beat Russian Anastasia Gasanova 7-6 (5), 6-2.
