Lewis Morgan scored late in the first half to lift the visiting New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 win against CF Montreal on Wednesday.

New York (13-8-8, 47 points) is an MLS-best 9-3-3 on the road.

Montreal (15-9-4, 49 points) had its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped.

New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel had to be sharp early. In the second minute, he came out above the penalty arc and heading an intended pass by Montreal out of reach back up the pitch.

Morgan had the first chance for the Red Bulls in the fifth minute when he took a feed from Elias Manoel, in his MLS debut, and aimed for the far side but was denied by goalkeeper James Pantemis.

Montreal winger Joaquin Torres showed off his quick feet in the 22nd minute, sidestepping New York defenders at the top of the arc for a shot that forced Coronel into a diving save to get his hands on the ball and deflect it away.

Pantemis was put to the test midway through the half on several chances from Manoel. In the 28th minute, the 20-year-old Brazilian was stopped from down low in the box. In the 32nd minute, he tried to beat the Montreal keeper short side shot from the left and a minute later, he attempted far side from the right but Pantemis came to the top of the goal area for the save.

Coronel denied Romell Quioto in the 37th minute, getting his chest in front a chance short side.

Morgan scored for the third time in the past four games in the 43rd minute. The Scotsman took a pass from Cristian Casseres Jr. down the left side, controlling it into the box before getting off a chip shot that beat Pantemis, who had come off his line to the top of the goal area for a 1-0 lead.

Casseres looked to double the Red Bulls’ lead in the 57th minute with a shot from the arc but Pantemis was there for the save.

Mason Toye came close to leveling the score for Montreal in the 76th minute off a feed from Quioto but his shot went just wide of the net.
