Jimmy Garoppolo’s destination for the 2022 season turned out to be the San Francisco 49ers.

Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed to a restructured one-year contract that will keep him in town as one of the highest-paid backup quarterbacks in the league this season, NFL Network and ESPN reported Monday.

Garoppolo’s new deal is worth a fully guaranteed $6.5 million in base with several other incentives — including play-time bonuses — that could raise his total earnings close to $16 million for the year, reports said.

With San Francisco committing to Trey Lance as its starting quarterback going forward, the 49ers were not expected to keep Garoppolo on the roster before Monday’s news.

The new deal reportedly includes a no-trade clause, meaning the ship has sailed on any of the other 31 teams in the league bringing in Garoppolo for this season.

Garoppolo’s agents were given permission to seek a trade last month. Some of the speculated destinations included the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks. But the Panthers acquired Baker Mayfield and named him their starter, the Browns will head into Deshaun Watson’s 11-game suspension with Jacoby Brissett and the Seahawks named Geno Smith their Week 1 starter over Drew Lock.

Garoppolo had offseason shoulder surgery that dampened his market around the league, but he has since returned to throwing.

Garoppolo has played 46 games (starting 45) for the Niners over the past five seasons, amassing a 31-14 record as a starter and helping the team reach two NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl. He has thrown for 11,162 yards, 66 touchdowns and 38 interceptions for San Francisco.

Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 draft, saw action in six games last year, receiving two starts. He threw for 603 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions and ran for another 168 yards and a touchdown during his rookie season.
