NFL: Giants consider first-team reps for QB Tyrod Taylor

Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is in line for first-team reps with the New York Giants, but Daniel Jones remains the clear starter.

Head coach Brian Daboll said he could shift some of the starter reps before the 2022 season begins on Sept. 11.

Taylor went 13-of-21 passing for 129 yards and threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter of the preseason opener against the New England Patriots. He tagged in for Jones, who was 6 for 10 for 69 yards in the first quarter.

“As we get going here in terms of preseason games, we’ll talk about whatever we think is best,” Daboll said. “But I have full confidence in Daniel. And I have full confidence in Tyrod in what his role is. Each day we sit there and evaluate the guys, but will he get a few reps here or there? He might.”

The 33-year-old Taylor could be called upon this season given Jones’ history of injuries. He has missed time each of his three seasons and ended 2021 on injured reserve with a neck injury. The Giants declined the fifth-year option on the 25-year-old Jones’ contract.

Daboll emphasized the split of practice reps isn’t an indication of his depth chart at the position.

“Absolutely not. I learned from a pretty good coach a while ago,” Daboll said. “Usually, he doesn’t tell those guys when he throws them in, because that is what the backup job’s role is. You have to go in in a split second and prepare as if you’re the starter. Fourth play of the game something happens, you’re in and you have to be ready to go. I don’t think we’ll necessarily tell those guys when it will happen.”

The Giants are Taylor’s sixth team in 12 seasons. He started six games for the Texans last season, one for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, three for the Cleveland Browns in 2018 and 43 in three seasons for the Buffalo Bills from 2015-17.
