Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez (1-1) tossed five scoreless innings and gave up two hits. He struck out two and walked two.

The Nationals had just three hits in the game.

Washington starter Paolo Espino (0-2) lasted only 3 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and four runs to go along with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Phillies went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when Schwarber launched a leadoff solo homer to center field.

Schwarber’s second homer, this time with two outs in the third, gave the Phillies a 2-0 advantage. It was the 25th homer of the season for Schwarber and his 18th career multi-home run performance.

The Phillies pounded out a total of 13 hits.
