Sean Manaea pitched seven no-hit innings in his San Diego debut and Jurickson Profar belted a two-run homer to lead the Padres to a 3-0 victory over the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night in Phoenix.
Eric Hosmer went 3-for-4 and scored twice, and left-hander Taylor Rogers pitched a perfect ninth inning in his team debut as San Diego bounced back from Thursday’s disastrous season-opening loss.
The left-handed Manaea, acquired from the Oakland Athletics last Sunday, struck out seven and walked one in an 88-pitch outing before exiting.
Daulton Varsho was the only Arizona batter to reach base against Manaea (1-0), drawing a two-out walk in the second inning. Manaea retired the next 16 batters before being informed his night was over.
Left-hander Tim Hill replaced Manaea and gave up a line single to David Peralta to begin the eighth. Hill also allowed a single to Geraldo Perdomo later in the inning. Those were the Diamondbacks’ only hits.
Right-hander Dinelson Lamet entered with two on and two out and induced pinch hitter Seth Beer to fly to center. Beer hit the dramatic three-run walk-off homer in Arizona’s 4-2 win in the series opener.
Rogers, who was acquired from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, retired the first two hitters he faced on grounders before fanning Carson Kelly to end the game.
Hill also gave up San Diego’s first two hits on Thursday after right-hander Yu Darvish fired six no-hit innings before being pulled.
Profar and Jorge Alfaro had two hits apiece for the Padres, who had 11 overall.
Arizona left-hander Oliver Perez (0-1) entered with one out in the sixth and Hosmer greeted him with a first-pitch single to right. One out later, Profar jumped on the first pitch and sent it 410 feet over the fence in left center to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.
San Diego added a run in the eighth inning. Hosmer led off the frame with a double to left against Humberto Castellanos and Profar followed with a bunt toward third that Arizona’s Drew Ellis fielded and threw wildly to first as Hosmer came around to score.
Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly started and tossed four shutout innings. He gave up four hits, two walks and struck out seven while throwing 75 pitches.
