Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano suffered a mild sprain of his left ankle when he slipped while walking his dog, manager Charlie Montoyo said Thursday.

Montoyo said he expects the 28-year-old right-hander to be ready for the April 8 season opener against the visiting Texas Rangers.

Romano went 7-1 with a 2.14 ERA and 23 saves in 62 relief appearances last season for Toronto, striking out 85 batters in 63 innings.

The Ontario native is 9-4 with a 2.90 ERA and 25 saves through three seasons, all with the Blue Jays.

–The Blue Jays also signed veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler to a minor-league deal and invited him to spring training.

Fowler, 36, played in just seven games last season with the Los Angeles Angels before tearing the ACL in his left knee in early April.

In 14 MLB seasons, Fowler has appeared in 1,460 games, collecting 1,306 hits — 127 of them homers — and 517 RBIs. A lifetime .259 hitter, he was an All-Star with the Cubs in 2016, winning the World Series in the second of his two seasons in Chicago.

Fowler also has played for the Colorado Rockies (2008-13), Houston Astros (2014), St. Louis Cardinals (2017-20) and Angels.
