NCAAB: Kameron McGusty, Miami look to break trend at Boston College

Even though Miami has one of the more experienced and sixth-year-senior-laden teams in the nation, no Hurricanes player has ever won a game at Boston College.

On Wednesday night, the Hurricanes (20-9, 12-6 ACC) will get a chance to change that narrative when they visit the Eagles (11-17, 6-12).

Miami has lost three straight games at Boston College. The last time the Hurricanes won at BC was on Jan. 20, 2016.

BC and Miami have yet to meet this season, but they split two games in 2020-21, with each side winning at home. In the most recent meeting between the teams, Miami’s Kameron McGusty scored 27 points as the Hurricanes won 80-76.

McGusty, who spent his first two seasons with Oklahoma, sat out one year as a transfer student. In the three subsequent seasons, McGusty has played 77 games for Miami, including 68 starts.

This season, McGusty has played like a first-team All-ACC player, ranking tied for fourth in the league in scoring (17.7). He is fifth in free-throw percentage (82.6).

McGusty said Miami has saved his career.

“When I got here four years ago, I was broken,” McGusty said. “I lost my confidence at my last school.

“To get a chance at Miami to rewrite my story has been a blessing.”

A Miami win on Wednesday would clinch a double-bye for the Hurricanes in next week’s ACC Tournament.

Both Miami and BC are coming off losses. Miami blew an eight-point lead in the final two minutes, losing 71-70 to visiting Virginia Tech on Saturday.

BC had its two-game win streak snapped on Saturday with a 70-60 loss to Clemson.

Earl Grant, who is in his first year as BC’s coach, prides himself on having a tough team that gives great effort. That’s what he’s expecting against Miami.

“I hope we can finish strong and get back on our horse,” Grant said. “Try to have a good week next week, feel good about ourselves going to Brooklyn (for the ACC Tournament) and see if we can play our best basketball there.”
