CF Montreal signed midfielder Mathieu Choiniere to a two-year extension Saturday.

The 23-year-old homegrown player’s deal is for the 2023 and 2024 seasons and includes an option year in 2025.

“We are happy that Mathieu continues with us,” sporting director Olivier Renard said in a news release. “He had some difficult moments due to an injury which kept him off the pitch for several months, but he came back strong, proving his qualities in a different position. We hope that he will keep on progressing. This contract extension is aligned with the Club’s philosophy which is to have confidence in young players and if they are from the province of Quebec like Mathieu, it’s even better.”

Choiniere has been with Montreal since joining the MLS club’s academy in 2011.

He scored two goals in 26 games (24 starts) in 2021. He has played in 48 career matches (30 starts) since his MLS debut in 2018.

Montreal opens the 2022 MLS regular season Sunday at Orlando City.
