Andrew Jones and Marcus Carr scored 14 points apiece and powered a dominating second-half surge as No. 23rd Texas rolled past No. 20 Iowa State 63-41 on Saturday in Big 12 Conference play at Austin, Texas.
The Longhorns (17-6, 6-4 Big 12) jumped into the lead on Carr’s 3-pointer in the final second of the first half and never looked back. The Longhorns then reeled off a 15-0 run in middle of the second half before building as much as a 23-point lead.
Texas held the Cyclones to 28.6 shooting in the game and a 6-of-24 showing (25.0 percent) from the floor in the second half.
Christian Bishop added 10 points for Texas, which has won four of its past five games. The Longhorns made 9 of 23 shots (39.1 percent) from 3-point range and outscored Iowa State 24-2 off turnovers.
Izaiah Brockington led the Cyclones with 12 points. Tyrese Hunter added 10 for Iowa State (16-7, 3-7 in Big 12), which has dropped two straight games and four of its last six.
The Longhorns swept to a 10-3 lead three minutes into the game after a dunk and 3-pointer by Jones. But Iowa State rallied, holding Texas without a point for more than four minutes while forging an 11-0 run and leapfrogging to a 14-10 advantage.
The Longhorns tied the game at 16-all on a layup by Bishop with 9:04 to play in the half before Iowa State rebuilt its advantage to 23-20 with 2:07 left before halftime. Texas then closed the half on a 5-0 run, taking a 25-23 lead to the break after Carr’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Brockington led all scorers with 10 points at the half while Carr and Jones paced the Longhorns with 5 points each. Texas outshot the Cyclones 40 percent to 32 percent in the half as Iowa State missed eight of its final nine shots and had four turnovers in the final 5:31 of the half.
The Longhorns led 38-36 after Hunter’s three-point play with 12:26 to play. Texas then put away the game with its 15-0 run as Jones canned two 3-pointers and five other Longhorns scored in the spurt.
Iowa State missed nine straight shots and had three turnovers during Texas’s decisive seven-minute stretch.
