Jaiden Delaire scored 12 points, including a clinching layup with 26 seconds remaining, helping host Stanford hold on for a 57-50 victory over rival California on Tuesday.
All five starters produced at least eight points for the Cardinal (13-7, 6-4 Pac-12), who won for the ninth time in 10 home games this season.
Jordan Shepherd was the game’s leading scorer with 15 points for the Golden Bears (9-13, 2-9), who lost their eighth straight.
After a defense-dominated first half ended with Stanford up 21-20, the Cardinal gradually pulled away in the second 20 minutes, building a 35-28 advantage at the 11:23 mark on a Brandon Angel 3-pointer.
Cal hung within 40-37 on two Shepherd free throws with 6:12 to play, but Delaire converted a three-point play and Michael O’Connell added two free throws, allowing the Cardinal to extend the margin to eight just 44 seconds later.
The Golden Bears got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Harrison Ingram matched Delaire’s 12-point total for Stanford, while fellow starters Spencer Jones and O’Connell added nine points apiece and James Keefe had eight.
Delaire shot 5-for-10 and Ingram 4-for-10 for the Cardinal, who outshot the visitors 42 percent to 35.3 percent.
Keefe was the game’s leading rebounder with 11. Jones complemented his nine points with seven boards.
Shepherd’s game-high point total resulted from just 5-for-17 shooting overall and 1-for-6 on 3-point attempts. Each team struggled from long distance, with Stanford going 3-for-15 and Cal 3-for-14.
No player made more than one 3-pointer.
Lars Thiemann chipped in with 11 points for the Golden Bears, who will get a rematch with Stanford at home on Feb. 26.
Cal’s Grant Anticevich had a team-high seven rebounds to go with seven points.
