FC Dallas head coach Nico Estevez entered the COVID-19 protocol Sunday and will miss the start of a preseason trip to Bradenton, Fla.

According to the team, the first-year coach is asymptomatic and plans to watch the training sessions remotely.

Assistant coaches Ben Cross and Peter Luccin will manage Tuesday’s match against the U.S. Under-20 men’s national team.

Estevez, 42, was the only member of the FC Dallas traveling party to enter the league’s health and safety protocol. He will quarantine and rejoin the team once he receives clearance from the medical staff.

Estevez was hired in December to replace Luchi Gonzalez, who was fired in September. Estevez previously worked as an assistant with the Columbus Crew.

FC Dallas will open the regular season on Feb. 26 against Toronto FC in Frisco, Texas.
