Pitcher David Hess said Sunday he is cancer-free, three months after a cancerous tumor was discovered in his chest.
In a Twitter post, Hess, a four-year major league veteran currently assigned to the Triple-A Durham Bulls, said he had been “cured” and cleared for all activity.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for the prayers, support, and love through this,” the 28-year-old right-hander wrote. “Time to get back to work and on a mound hopefully soon.”
Got the news today that I’ve been “cured” and cleared for all activity! There’s a spot that we’re watching but expect to clear in a few weeks. On Oct. 13, Hess revealed the tumor was discovered after he experienced chest tightness and shortness of breath.
“After some scans, blood work, and time at the hospital we learned that I had a cancerous germ cell tumor sitting in the center (of) my chest pressing majorly against my heart and lungs,” he posted to social media at the time. “Today we got the final diagnosis and treatment plan that has chemo starting up on Monday to shrink and hopefully eradicate the tumor entirely.”
In 15 games last season (one start) with the Rays and Miami Marlins, Hess had a 2-2 record with a 9.90 ERA. He spent much of the season with Durham, where he posted a 6-2 mark and a 3.57 ERA in 20 games (two starts).
Hess spent the first three years of his MLB career with the Baltimore Orioles (2018-20) and has a career 6-22 record with a 6.25 ERA in 62 games (34 starts).
