The postseason College Basketball Invitational will be played entirely at Daytona Beach, Fla., for the second straight year, but will return to 16 teams after eight took part in the tournament last year.
The event, which was not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, returned with an altered format last year after it was played at on-campus sites until 2019. Changes to a one-site format were in line with the 2021 NCAA Tournament, which was played entirely in the state of Indiana. The NCAA is moving ahead with plans to return to its usual multiple-region format for this year’s tournament.
The NIT was played entirely at two venues in the Dallas area last year and was reduced from 32 to 16 teams. There is no word on what format the NCAA-operated tournament will use this season.
Pepperdine of the West Coast Conference won last year’s CBI at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. This year’s tournament also will be held entirely at the Ocean Center.
The 2022 CBI will be a single-elimination format, as it was last year. Earlier versions of the event had a best-of-three championship series.
