Providence athletic director Bob Driscoll is retiring in June after 47 years in collegiate athletics, he announced Friday. He has been in his current position for 21 years.
“I feel so fortunate that I have been able to spend the last 21 years as a member of the Providence College family,” Driscoll said in a news release. “I came to Providence with a goal of a student-centered vision for athletics. I feel like I have played a part in creating a model program in college athletics with the student-athlete experience at the center of our vision.”
Over the past decade, Providence won the national title in women’s cross country (2013), saw its men’s basketball team make five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, brought home the men’s hockey national championship (2015) amid six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four berths, and watched the men’s soccer team qualify for the NCAA tournament for 10 straight years.
“Bob has been an amazing coach, leader and friend during my 11 years at Providence College,” men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley said. “His ability to think outside the box and be creative are just a few the qualities that helped make him so effective. … We will all miss his leadership.”
Driscoll also has been credited with improving the school facilities, including the construction of a home field for the soccer and lacrosse teams, renovation of the hockey arena and addition of a softball complex.
Before moving to Providence, Driscoll worked in athletics administration at Cal.
