Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Lerentee McCray led police on a high-speed pursuit early Sunday morning in Florida, leading to his arrest on a felony charge of fleeing/eluding police with disregard of safety to person or property.
McCray was also cited for speeding after his truck was clocked at 88 mph in a 50 mph zone just before 1 a.m. Sunday. Per the police report, which was reported by multiple outlets Tuesday, an officer initially tried to pull the truck over but the driver reached out the window and made “an expletive hand gesture using their middle finger.”
Two officers chased McCray at speeds reaching 100 mph. Fruitland Park Police Department eventually abandoned the chase as McCray drove increasingly recklessly, but a nearby town’s police later notified them that McCray’s vehicle came to a stop.
McCray was brought to a local hospital for a mental evaluation after he was judged to be in an “altered” mental state. There, when the officer interviewed McCray about not pulling over, he reportedly replied, “Oh that was you? My bad.”
The Jaguars said in a statement that they were aware of McCray’s situation and had no further comment.
McCray, 31, just completed his seventh NFL season and his fourth with the Jaguars. He plays primarily on special teams and saw action in 12 games in 2021. He’s scheduled to become a free agent this offseason.
