Kerry “K3rryq” Lee got a key defensive stand to win his quarterfinal match in the Madden Ultimate Wild Card 22 event on Thursday, sealing a spot in the upcoming Madden Bowl.
K3rryq beat Michael “VoLTeRaX” Bryant 20-17 to advance to a semifinal against Wesley “Wesley” Gittens, who topped George “DntCareAboutIce” Swartz 41-38.
On the other half of the bracket, Henry “Henry” Leverette defeated Drini “Drini” Gjoka 26-20 in overtime, preventing Drini from wrapping up a Madden Bowl berth. Instead, Drini will have to earn a spot through the Last Chance Qualifier.
Henry’s semifinal foe will be “Spamminbuttons,” a 34-33 winner over Noah “Noahupnxt” Johnson.
VoLTeRaX had a fourth-and-2 at K3rryq’s 30-yard line in the final minute. Instead of trying for a game-tying field goal, he attempted a pass, which fell incomplete, sending K3rryq to the Madden Bowl.
Drini looked to be a safe bet for the Madden Bowl when he got a first-and-goal in the final minutes of a tie game. He kicked a 35-yard field goal with 30 seconds left for a 20-17 lead, but Henry got in position to drill a 60-yard field goal with three seconds to go, forcing overtime.
Henry won the toss and drove down for the winning scoring on a 10-yard touchdown run. Drini’s loss sends “Astro” to the Madden Bowl.
Spamminbuttons sealed his win with an end-zone interception on Noahupnxt’s two-point conversion attempt with four seconds to go.
The Madden Ultimate Wild Card semifinals and final will be contested Friday night.
