Five-time Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray has accepted a wild-card entry into next month’s Grand Slam event in Melbourne.

The 34-year-old from Scotland hasn’t competed in the Australian Open since 2019, when he lost in the first round shortly before undergoing hip surgery. He withdrew from the tournament in 2020 following an injury setback, then withdrew from the 2021 event after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Andy is renowned for his fighting spirit, passion and love of the game and I’m delighted to welcome him back to Melbourne in January,” tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement on Thursday.

Murray, a three-time Grand Slam winner and former World No. 1, lost in the Australian Open finals in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016.

“I’m really excited to be back playing at the Australian Open and grateful to Craig and the team for the opportunity,” Murray said. “I’ve had some great times in Australia playing in front of the amazing crowds and I can’t wait to step back out on court at Melbourne Park.”

The Australian Open runs from Jan. 17-30.
