Izaiah Brockington poured in 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting to help No. 17 Iowa State roll to a 73-53 victory over visiting Iowa in nonconference action on Thursday night in Ames, Iowa.

Tyrese Hunter added 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Cyclones (9-0), who matched the third-best start in program history. Brockington fell one point shy of his career high and collected 10 rebounds as Iowa State snapped a three-game slide against the Hawkeyes.

Jordan Bohannon scored 17 points but Keegan Murray had just nine on 4-of-17 shooting for Iowa (7-3), which lost its third straight game. Murray entered the contest as the nation’s leading scorer at 23.9 points per game.

Iowa State owned a 50-32 edge on the boards. Iowa has been outrebounded 102-55 over its past two games.

The Cyclones shot 43.5 percent from the field, including 8 of 25 from 3-point range.

The Hawkeyes shot a porous 27 percent and were 5 of 27 from 3-point range while scoring their fewest points of the campaign.

Iowa State led 38-26 at halftime before beginning the second half with a game-breaking 17-5 run.

Aljaz Kunc buried a 3-pointer to make it 50-29 with 14:10 left in the game, and Hunter followed with a fast-break layup 28 seconds later.

Tre Jackson culminated the burst with a 3-pointer to make it 55-31 with 12:22 remaining.

Iowa showed some life with an 11-2 burst, moving within 57-42 on Bohannon’s 3-pointer with 8:31 remaining.

But Kunc responded with a fast-break layup and Brockington drained a 3-pointer as the Cyclones pushed the lead back to 20 with 7:05 to play and cruised to the finish.

Brockington had 17 points on 7-of-7 shooting as Iowa State held the 12-point lead at the break.

Iowa held a 17-16 lead midway through the first half before the Cyclones exploded on a 15-2 burst. Brockington capped the run with a jumper to give Iowa State a 31-19 advantage with 3:46 remaining.

Brockington scored five points in the final 70 seconds to help get the Cyclones’ lead back to 12.

Murray was scoreless and missed all seven of his first-half shots.
