The Minnesota Twins on Wednesday officially announced the signing of center fielder Byron Buxton to a seven-year extension through the 2028 season.
Multiple reports Sunday said the deal is worth $100 million and includes a full no-trade clause. There are also bonuses for finishing in the top 10 in Most Valuable Player voting, including $8 million for winning the award.
Buxton, 27, would have been eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season. The former Gold Glove winner reportedly rejected a seven-year, $73 million offer from the Twins in July.
He batted .306 with a career-high 19 home runs, 32 RBIs, 50 runs scored and nine stolen bases last season, despite being limited to just 61 games due to two separate stints on the injured list.
His 1.005 OPS led American League hitters with at least 200 at-bats and ranked second in baseball, trailing only National League MVP Bryce Harper (1.044) of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Buxton is a career .248/.299/.461 hitter with 70 homers, 204 RBIs and 71 steals in seven seasons with the Twins, who drafted him No. 2 overall in 2012. He won a Gold Glove in 2017.
