NCAAB: No. 2 Purdue pounds Florida State to remain perfect

Jaden Ivey scored 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting, and No. 2 Purdue pulled away for a 93-65 win over visiting Florida State on Tuesday night in West Lafayette, Ind.

Brandon Newman added 13 points in 17 minutes off the bench, and Zach Edey tallied 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting for Purdue (7-0). Sasha Stefanovic contributed 11 points and a team-high eight assists.

Caleb Mills scored 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting to lead Florida State (5-2). John Butler notched 10 points as the only other Seminoles player to score in double figures.

Purdue had a 38-26 edge in points in the paint, as well as a 31-16 advantage in bench scoring.

The Boilermakers outscored the Seminoles 48-32 in the first half and 45-33 in the second half.

Purdue went on a 12-0 run to seize a 71-51 lead with 8:44 to go. Stefanovic buried a pair of 3-pointers during the run, which included a 3-pointer by Newman and a trio of free throws from Caleb Furst.

The Seminoles opened the second half on a 14-7 run to shave the deficit to 55-46 with 14:01 remaining. Mills started the scoring for Florida State with a 3-pointer, and he assisted on a 3-pointer by Cam’Ron Fletcher to punctuate the run.

Purdue built a 48-32 lead at halftime. Ivey led all scorers with 13 points while making five of his first six shots.

The Boilermakers opened a 29-16 advantage on a dunk by Edey with 9:23 to go in the half. The play, set up by Ivey, gave Edey eight points in the first 11 minutes.

Florida State pulled within seven points on a layup by Mills with 5:22 left before intermission. But the Seminoles were outscored 13-4 for the rest of the half.

Ivey made a layup off an assist from Isaiah Thompson in the final minute to push the lead to 16.

The Seminoles played without three key players. RayQuan Evans attended funeral services for his brother, who died after a fight against leukemia. Tanor Ngom (knee) and Naheem McLeod (ankle) also did not play.
