Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield wasn’t talking after Sunday’s game, but he had plenty to say Monday and he didn’t mince words.
Mayfield on Monday dismissed booing fans while panning his own performance against the Detroit Lions. All of that after a victory.
“I’d be the first to tell you I played like s—,” Mayfield said Monday.
But he also had a message to the fans who booed him during the Lions’ game.
“Those are probably the same fans who won’t be quiet when we’re on offense and trying to operate. So don’t really care,” he said.
Mayfield said he skipped talking with the media — and celebrating with his teammates on the field — after Sunday’s game because he was frustrated with his own performance. Mayfield completed just 51.7 percent of his passes for 176 yards, with a touchdown against two interceptions in the 13-10 win over Detroit.
“My guys know that all I care about is winning, but I’m going to be frustrated if I do stuff to make it harder on us, and I did yesterday,” Mayfield said. “That’s just flat out what it was. … I’m just frustrated how I played.”
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski fell on the sword Monday but maintained that he and Mayfield share a similar vision.
“I take a lion’s share, put that responsibility on me. I need to do better,” Stefanski said. “There were plays that we just didn’t do a good enough job yesterday in giving the guys an opportunity. But I do think as a collective group we’re on the same page.”
Stefanski said Mayfield remains the starter for Cleveland’s all-important AFC North clash against Baltimore (7-3) this week. The Browns (6-5) are two games behind the Ravens in the loss column.
The Browns will play the Ravens in back-to-back games with their bye sandwiched in between.
