Practices and qualifiers will return to NASCAR races in 2022 after being all but curtailed for more than a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
NASCAR announced Friday that the knockout-style qualifying will depend on the track type and the race series but that it will go on for all three national series in 2022. It was cut back to reduce travel days and lessen the number of personnel at tracks during the pandemic.

“NASCAR is excited to return practice and qualifying to its race weekends,” said Scott Miller, NASCAR senior vice president of competition, in a news release. “We missed seeing cars and trucks on track all weekend long, and so did our fans. We worked closely with our broadcast partners, teams and racetracks to create an exciting, unique qualifying format, while keeping several of the efficiencies that helped our entire industry successfully navigate the pandemic.”
The 2022 race season begins Feb. 6 in Los Angeles with the Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum.
