Michigan coach Juwan Howard received an extension through the 2025-26 season, athletic director Warde Manuel announced Tuesday.
Howard is in his third season as the Wolverines’ coach and is 44-18 after a 67-65 home loss to Seton Hall on Tuesday night.
Howard won a school-record 42 games over his first two seasons, surpassing his mentor Steve Fisher, who won 37 games in his first two full seasons.
“I’m honored to be regarded in such a way that the University wished to continue a lasting relationship with me,” Howard said in a news release. “It was a surprise when Warde approached me, and it didn’t take long for us to get on the same page. I’m grateful to him, our great University and my talented young men who sacrifice every day. The love I have for the University of Michigan is beyond words.”
Howard’s squad went 23-5 last season. The Wolverines were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament but lost to UCLA in the Elite Eight.
In Howard’s first season, Michigan went 19-12 before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the season.
“I couldn’t be happier for our student-athletes and fans to know that Juwan will continue to lead Michigan into the future,” Manuel said in the news release. “His great character is second to none, and he is a wonderful teammate — demonstrated through his commitment to proactive communication and collaboration across the department. Juwan’s love for this university is evident in all that he does, as is the joy he takes in the accomplishments of his student-athletes.”
Howard was a star player for Fisher-coached Michigan as part of the famed “Fab Five” that included Chris Webber and Jalen Rose. He averaged 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in 100 games (95 starts), topped by a 20.8 average as a junior during the 1993-94 season.
Howard was the No. 5 pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. He was an All-Star with the Washington Wizards in 1995-96 and won an NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2011-12.
He averaged 13.4 points and 6.1 rebounds in 1,208 games over 19 NBA seasons.
