Zach Fucale notched a shutout in his NHL debut, leading the Washington Capitals to a 2-0 win over the host Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
Fucale, who was called up from the Hershey Bears of the AHL on Wednesday, stopped 21 shots as Washington won for the second straight time after a three-game losing streak. Fucale, 26, was a second-round draft pick in 2013 by the Montreal Canadiens.
Dmitry Orlov and Lars Eller scored for the Capitals in a 10-second span during the first period. Alex Ovechkin remained tied with Brett Hull for fourth place on the all-time goal scoring list, though he did have an assist. Ovechkin, who ranks second in the NHL with 11 goals, did not have a shot on goal.
Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss made 27 saves.
Penguins 3, Panthers 2 (SO)
Jeff Carter got the deciding shootout goal as host Pittsburgh topped Florida to snap a two-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh’s Bryan Rust and the Panthers’ Jonathan Huberdeau scored earlier in the shootout, which was the Penguins’ fourth straight game going beyond regulation.
Jonathan Huberdeau converted in the shootout, and Frank Vatrano and Aleksander Barkov got regulation goals for Florida, which lost its third straight after starting the season 10-0-1.
Predators 4, Blues 3 (OT)
Matt Duchene scored twice and added an assist as visiting Nashville edged St. Louis in overtime.
Duchene, who has six goals in his last six games, scored the overtime winner. Luke Kunin had a goal and an assist and Yakov Trenin also scored for the Predators, who finished their six-game road trip with a 4-1-1 mark.
Jordan Kyrou scored twice for the Blues, who have earned points in 10 of their 12 games. Vladimir Tarasenko added a goal, Robert Thomas had two assists and Jordan Binnington made 23 saves.
Kings 2, Senators 0
Jonathan Quick made 34 saves for the 55th shutout of his NHL career and Los Angeles extended its winning streak to seven by blanking host Ottawa.
Anze Kopitar and Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Kings, who last won seven in a row from Feb. 26 to March 11, 2020, the final seven games before the season was shut down because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Filip Gustavsson made 34 saves for the Senators, who have nine players in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. They were shut out for the first time in 78 games, the longest streak in the NHL.
Oilers 5, Bruins 3
Leon Draisaitl scored a pair of goals little more than three minutes apart in the third period as Edmonton rallied past host Boston.
Draisaitl was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on Brandon Carlo’s giveaway in the slot and wristed the tying goal past Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark at the 6:22 mark. Draisaitl’s league-leading 12th goal of the season gave the Oilers a 4-3 lead 3:04 later.
The All-Star center entered play tied with teammate Connor McDavid for the NHL lead in points with 23. Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen recorded 26 saves to improve to 8-1-0 on the season.
Canadiens 4, Flames 2
Nick Suzuki scored a go-ahead goal with 7:52 remaining in the third period to fuel host Montreal to a win over Calgary.
Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher joined Suzuki with a goal and an assist, and Jake Evans and defenseman Ben Chiarot also tallied. Mike Hoffman and Tyler Toffoli each notched a pair of assists, and Jake Allen finished with 24 saves for the Canadiens.
Andrew Mangiapane scored his team-leading ninth goal and Mikael Backlund also tallied for the Flames, who have lost two in a row in regulation.
Devils 4, Islanders 0
Mackenzie Blackwood made 42 saves, Dougie Hamilton collected a goal and an assist, and New Jersey blanked New York in Newark, N.J.
Janne Kuokkanen scored his first career short-handed goal and Tomas Tatar tallied on the power play as the Devils won their third straight game. Dawson Mercer added a breakaway goal in the third period and Hamilton scored late in the third after missing the previous three games with a lower-body injury.
Blackwood posted his seventh career shutout by stopping 16 shots in the first period, 14 in the second and 12 in the third.
Jets 4, Sharks 1
Pierre-Luc Dubois had a goal and an assist and Andrew Copp added two assists as Winnipeg beat visiting San Jose.
Down 1-0 midway through the first period, the Jets scored four unanswered goals to improve to 5-1-1 on home ice this season. Kyle Connor, Nate Schmidt and Jansen Harkins scored for the Jets before Dubois sealed the game with an empty-net score.
Andrew Cogliano scored San Jose’s only goal.
Avalanche 7, Canucks 1
Mikko Rantanen had a goal and two assists, Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves and Colorado beat Vancouver in Denver.
Devon Toews and Logan O’Connor each produced a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who snapped a two-game skid. Valeri Nichushkin, J.T. Compher, Gabriel Landeskog and Darren Helm also had goals, and Cale Makar and Samuel Girard registered two assists apiece.
Nils Hoglander scored the Canucks’ lone goal. Vancouver goalie Thatcher Demko stopped 20 shots before being replaced by Jaroslav Halak, who made eight saves.
Golden Knights 3, Wild 2
Paul Cotter and Jonas Rondbjerg each scored their first NHL goals and Laurent Brossoit made 24 saves to lead Vegas past Minnesota in Las Vegas.
Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the Golden Knights, who won for the seventh time in their past nine games. Vegas killed off six penalties in the contest, including a five-on-three power play for 1:39 in the second period.
Ryan Hartman and Jared Spurgeon scored and Cam Talbot finished with 32 saves for the Wild, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Ducks 7, Kraken 4
Troy Terry scored twice and added an assist to extend his point streak to an NHL-leading 13 games as Anaheim won at Seattle.
Mason McTavish, Josh Mahura, Kevin Shattenkirk, Hampus Lindholm and Sam Carrick also scored for the Ducks, who won their sixth contest in a row. John Gibson made 21 saves.
Jared McCann scored twice for Seattle after being out since Oct. 28 while in the league’s COVID-19 protocol. Jaden Schwartz and Jordan Eberle also tallied for the expansion Kraken, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 29 of 34 shots.
