WTA: Top seed Emma Raducanu upset at Linz

U.S. Open champion and top-seeded Emma Raducanu suffered a loss to Xinyu Wang of China on Tuesday at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in Linz, Austria.

Wang, ranked No. 106 in the world, defeated Raducanu 6-1, 6-7 (0), 7-5 in two hours, 36 minutes in the Round of 16. Raducanu had eight aces and got her first serve in 80.5 percent of the time. However, the 20-year-old Brit won just 57.9 percent of her first serves.

Second-seeded Simona Halep of Romania made quick work of Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5, 6-3. No. 3 seed Danielle Collins of the U.S. needed just one hour, five minutes to defeat Germany’s Greet Minnen 6-1, 6-2. No. 4 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia advanced with a three-set victory over Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine.

Seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini of Italy defeated China’s Saisai Zheng 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, and No. 8 seed Alison Riske of the U.S. defeated France’s Alize Cornet in straight sets.

Other winners included Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium and Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, who won when Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson was forced to retire in the first set, trailing 5-2.
