The San Diego Padres hired Bob Melvin as their new manager, ending his 11-year tenure in the same position with the Oakland Athletics, MLB.com and ESPN reported Thursday night.

The Athletics had picked up the option for 2022 on Melvin’s contract but allowed him to interview for the position, the reports said. San Diego is not sending any compensation to Oakland as part of the move.

Melvin’s new deal is reportedly for three years.

In 11 seasons with the A’s, Melvin managed the small-payroll team to three American League West titles and six playoff appearances. Oakland went 853-764 during his tenure.

Before Oakland, Melvin — who turned 60 Thursday — managed the Seattle Mariners in 2003 and 2004 and the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005-2009.

Melvin replaces Jayce Tingler, whom the Padres fired earlier this month after San Diego fizzled down the stretch and missed the playoffs. Tingler had compiled a 116-106 record in two seasons as manager and guided the Padres to the National League Divisional Series in 2020.

The Padres reportedly had interviewed former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, former New York Mets manager Luis Rojas, former Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels manager Brad Ausmus, and former Chicago White Sox and Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen for the position before landing on Melvin.
