NHL: Penguins coach: Sidney Crosby ‘whole lot closer’ to returning

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby appears to be making strides toward returning to the lineup.

Crosby participated in a second consecutive practice on Monday. He is working his way back from left wrist surgery on Sept. 8.

“The fact that Sid is starting to participate consistently in team practices is real encouraging, and that suggests he’s a whole lot closer,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said, per Pens Inside Scoop.

Crosby, 34, skated on a line with Jason Zucker and Danton Heinen during Monday’s practice.

“Obviously, we want to get Sid in the lineup as quickly as we possibly can,” Sullivan said. “He’s that much of a difference-maker for us. But we also want to make sure that we do it in a safe manner. That’s an important aspect of it as well. We’ll rely and trust on our medical team.”

A three-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Hart Trophy recipient, Crosby has recorded 1,325 points (486 goals, 839 assists) in 1,039 games since being selected by the Penguins with the top overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft.

The Penguins (3-0-2) return to action Tuesday against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.
