Artemi Panarin scored at 3:48 of overtime and the visiting New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 on Monday night.

After the Rangers won a faceoff, Panarin scored from the right circle for his first goal of the season. It was New York’s second win in a row.

Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers in the first period and assisted on the winning goal. Michael Bunting scored for the Maple Leafs, who have alternated wins and losses through four games this season.

Igor Shesterkin made 40 saves in a superb effort for the Rangers, and Jack Campbell stopped 21 shots for Toronto.

Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews, who missed the first three games of the season while recovering from wrist surgery, made his season debut. He had eight shots on goal, two in overtime, but no points.

Nils Lundkvist hit a goal post with a shot at 6:25 of the first period for New York.

Zibanejad scored from the high slot at 13:49 of the first, taking advantage of Campbell’s poor clearance attempt. Zibanejad’s shot hit the goal post, and a video review determined that it had entered the net.

The Maple Leafs had the only two power plays of the first period and had two shots hit posts in the final minutes. Toronto had a 12-10 advantage of shots on goal in the first period.

Bunting jammed in the puck from the edge of the crease at 1:36 of the second period after Morgan Rielly took a shot. John Tavares also earned an assist.

Toronto dominated the second and led 29-12 in shots on goal after two periods.

The Rangers started better in the third period, and a shot by Panarin tested Campbell early.

The Rangers went on the first power play of the third period at 11:46 when Jake Muzzin was called for hooking, but they failed to score.

Toronto had a 38-19 advantage in shots on goal after three periods.

Ryan Strome (COVID-19 protocols) and Kaapo Kakko (upper-body injury) did not play for the Rangers.
