NWSL: NWSL roundup: Big first half carries Current past Royals

The Kansas City Current scored all three of their goals in the first half and blanked the visiting Utah Royals 3-0 on Saturday night.

Michelle Cooper had a goal and an assist, and Temwa Chawinga and Debinha also scored for the Current (3-0-0, 9 points). Lorena made three saves in goal for Kansas City.

The Current doubled up the Royals in shot attempts (16-8) and shots on goal (6-3). Mandy McGlynn made three saves for Utah (0-1-2, 1 point).

Chawinga scored from close range in the 22nd minute, set up by Cooper, for a 1-0 lead. Cooper did it herself from 6 yards out in the 37th minute, and Debinha put Kansas City in command with a goal two minutes into first-half stoppage time.

Pride 2, Wave 1

Marta scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute and to break a tie and Orlando stayed unbeaten with the home win over the San Diego.

Haley McCutcheon also scored for Orlando (3-0-0, 9 points), which had four shots on goal to one for San Diego (1-1-1, 4 points). Her goal came in the 50th minute for a 1-0 lead. Anna Moorhouse finished without a save for Orlando.

Chiamaka Okwuchukwu netted a goal on a header for the Wave in the 62nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. It was assisted by Kenza Dali, and it survived a video review. Goalie Kailen Sheridan made two saves.

Courage 0, Thorns 0

Mackenzie Arnold made five saves for host Portland, including stopping a penalty shot in the 76th minute, in the draw with North Carolina.

Jaedyn Shaw of the Courage (0-2-1, 2 points) just missed left in the 71st minute on a shot from outside the box, but she got another opportunity on a penalty after Portland’s Reyna Reyes fouled Ashley Sanchez in the penalty area. Arnold made the save on the right-footed shot.

North Carolina had five shots on goal to two for Portland (0-2-1, 2 points), but the hosts led in shot attempts 19-14.
