Arizona State didn’t have to go far to find its next women’s basketball coach, hiring Molly Miller away from Grand Canyon.

Miller led Grand Canyon to its first NCAA Tournament this season. The 13th-seeded Lopes lost their first-round game to fourth-seeded Baylor, 73-60, on Friday in Waco, Texas.

The defeat shattered the 30-game winning streak for Grand Canyon; the Phoenix school finished the season 32-3.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Coach Molly Miller to the Sun Devil family. Molly’s track record of excellence — both on and off the court — aligns seamlessly with our vision for ASU women’s basketball,” said Graham Rossini, Arizona State’s athletic director. “She has built winning cultures at every level, from her days as a high school state champion and valedictorian to becoming one of the most exciting and sought-after coaches in Division I basketball.”

At Grand Canyon, athletic director Jamie P. Boggs issued a statement thanking Miller and said the next Lopes coach would be revealed Monday.

“We want to thank Coach Molly Miller for her five seasons leading our program, culminating in the first conference title and NCAA tournament appearance for women’s basketball,” Boggs said. “We wish her the best in her new opportunity.”

Miller, 38, had a 117-38 at Grand Canyon since taking over the program before the 2020-21 season. She began her coaching career at her alma mater, Division II Drury, where her teams were 180-17 over six seasons.

Earlier this month, Arizona State fired coach Natasha Adair, who was 29-62 over three seasons.
