Non-roster invitee Brandon Drury went 3-for-3 with two home runs, one double and five RBIs as the Chicago White Sox led the whole way for a 7-3 victory over a visiting Cincinnati Reds split squad in spring training action Friday in Phoenix.
Drury, a 10-year MLB veteran, went deep to left center in his first at-bat to establish a 2-0 lead and added a three-run shot in the fourth.
White Sox starter Mason Adams (1-1) claimed the win despite allowing two runs with no hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings. Brooks Baldwin produced two hits and a stolen base.
Reds starter Graham Ashcraft (0-3) took the loss as he gave up three hits, four walks and three runs in 2 2/3 innings. Will Banfield cracked a solo homer, Sal Stewart poked two hits and Elly De La Cruz’s sixth steal of the spring highlighted the Reds’ four stolen bases.
Nationals 5, Braves 3
Jared McKenzie’s two-run homer with two outs in the eighth lifted visiting Washington to the victory over Atlanta in North Port, Fla.
Nationals starter Jackson Rutledge allowed one hit over three scoreless innings. Patrick Weigel (1-0) picked up the win by throwing a scoreless seventh while Tyler Schoff set down the side in the ninth for the save.
James Wood cracked two doubles off Atlanta starter Spencer Schwellenbach, who fanned seven during his 4 2/3 innings but allowed four hits and two runs. Chasen Shreve (0-1) allowed three runs in the eighth to take the loss. Marcell Ozuna popped his second homer of the spring for the Braves.
Red Sox 9, Marlins 4
Highly touted prospect Roman Anthony hit a fourth-inning solo homer to highlight his 2-for-4, four-RBI day as Boston opened a 9-0 lead and beat host Miami in Jupiter, Fla.
Red Sox starter Richard Fitts (1-0) allowed just one hit with four whiffs during his 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Seby Zavala added a two-run homer and Romy Gonzalez notched two RBIs.
Starter Max Meyer (0-2) struck out four in three innings, but allowed three hits, one walk and two runs.
Athletics 12, Angels (ss) 1
Shea Langeliers went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double as the Athletics rolled over a visiting Los Angeles split squad in Mesa, Ariz.
Willie MacIver, Langeliers’ backup, added a homer as part of his 2-for-2 showing as the Athletics racked up 13 hits and six walks. Starting pitcher Joey Estes (3-0) allowed one run and struck out three during his four-inning stint.
Nolan Schanuel and David Mershon contributed two hits apiece for the Angels. Starter Tyler Anderson (1-2) surrendered six runs, seven hits and three walks during his 3 1/3 innings.
Guardians 8, Mariners 7
Pinch runner William Hawke scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on second baseman Joshua Hood’s throwing error as host Cleveland rallied to beat Seattle in Goodyear, Ariz.
Will Brennan cracked a pair of two-run homers after Lane Thomas hit a three-run shot as the Guardians recovered from a 5-0 deficit. Cleveland starter Logan Allen gave up six hits and four earned runs in his 3 2/3 innings.
Julio Rodriguez and Jorge Polanco each drove in two runs for Seattle. Emerson Hancock threw four scoreless innings in relief, then Jason Ruffcorn (0-1) took the loss for allowing the game-winning unearned run.
Diamondbacks 2, Reds (ss) 1
Pavin Smith cracked a 424-foot solo homer in the eighth to lift host Arizona over Cincinnati’s split squad in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez was perfect during his 3 2/3-inning effort as he struck out six of the 11 batters he faced. Corbin Carroll poked a double and Ketel Marte added an RBI single for Arizona.
The Reds managed just three hits, which included 20-year-old shortstop Sammy Stafura’s sixth-inning solo homer off A.J. Puk. Rookie starter Chase Petty allowed one run and four walks in three innings. Yosver Zulueta (0-1) took the loss after allowing Smith’s homer.
Royals 9, Angels (ss) 8
Peyton Wilson hit the go-ahead solo homer in the eighth as visiting Kansas City erased a six-run deficit to claim the win over Los Angeles’ split squad in Tempe, Ariz.
Hunter Renfroe went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, one double and one steal for the Royals. Starter Michael Wacha struck out four in his 3 1/3 innings, but he allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned). Taylor Clarke collected the win while allowing one run in 1 1/3 innings.
Yusei Kikuchi fanned eight in his 4 1/3-inning stint and allowed just one run while giving up five hits and three walks. Nick Jones (0-1) allowed Wilson’s homer to take the loss.
Brewers 11, Giants 5
Christian Yelich whacked a grand slam off Jordan Hicks in the third inning to spark host Milwaukee past San Francisco in Phoenix.
Marco Dinges, Jared Oliva and Joey Ortiz added homers in the sixth and seventh off Juan Mercedes. Brewers starter Nestor Cortes fanned seven in 3 1/3 innings, but also surrendered seven hits, two walks and three runs. Garrett Stallings (1-0) vultured the win after getting one out in the fourth.
Luis Matos and David Villar cracked homers off Cortes for the Giants while Lisbel Diaz added a two-run shot in the ninth. Hicks (0-1) gave up five hits and four runs in his 2 2/3 innings.
Pirates 8, Tigers 8
Max Anderson’s solo homer in the ninth off Ryan Borucki allowed visiting Detroit to forge the tie with Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla.
Ryan Kreidler and Dillon Dingler added solo shots for the Tigers while Max Clark, the third overall pick in the 2023 draft, stroked a two-run double. Starter Keider Montero threw four scoreless innings as he fanned four and allowed two hits.
Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo notched two hits apiece for the Pirates. Starter Andrew Heaney gave up five hits and four runs (two earned) during his four-inning outing.
Twins (ss) 13, Rays 6
Leadoff man Matt Wallner slammed his fourth and fifth homers of the spring and drove in five runs to pace Minnesota’s split squad over visiting Tampa Bay in Fort Myers, Fla.
Willi Castro cracked a two-run homer and scored three runs. Byron Buxton went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Twins starter Chris Paddack (1-0) fanned six in four innings, but he allowed four hits and two runs.
Ben Rortvedt hit a solo homer and drove in another run for the Rays while Curtis Mead went 3-for-5. Starter Zack Littell (0-1) lasted just two-plus innings as he surrendered seven hits, three walks and six runs.
Orioles 10, Twins (ss) 0
Ryan Mountcastle, Adley Rutschman and Colton Cowser powered homers as host Baltimore rolled over Minnesota’s split squad in Sarasota, Fla.
Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano (2-0) threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to keep his ERA at 0.00 through 10 1/3 innings spread across four appearances this spring. Mountcastle drove in four runs with his two hits while Tyler O’Neill, Jordan Westburg and Livan Soto also notched two hits.
Christian Vazquez posted two of the Twins’ three hits (all singles) on the day. Starter David Festa (0-1) gave up seven hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings as his ERA moved to 11.91.
Astros 6, Blue Jays 5
Tyler Whitaker’s single with two outs in the ninth drove in Ben Gamel and gave host Houston the walk-off win over Toronto in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Zach Dezenzo went 3-for-4 with a homer and a stolen base for the Astros while Yainer Diaz added a two-run shot. Starter Hayden Wesneski gave up three runs on two hits and four walks during his 3 1/3 innings. Brody Rodning (1-0) tossed a perfect ninth to claim the win.
Andres Gimenez staked the Blue Jays to a first-inning lead with a two-run triple. Will Wagner added two hits in the leadoff spot. Starter Yariel Rodriguez allowed three hits, three walks and two runs during his 3 2/3-inning effort. Josh Walker (0-1) took the loss.
Mets 3, Cardinals 3
Juan Soto swatted his fourth homer of the spring for host New York, which played to a tie with St. Louis in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Soto went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mets starter Kodai Senga permitted seven hits in 3 2/3 innings, but they led to just two runs.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy tossed four innings, and Soto’s solo shot was the only run he allowed. Yohel Pozo poked a two-run homer off Senga in the third. Victor Scott II, Nolan Gorman and Matt Koperniak notched two hits apiece.
Yankees 6, Phillies 5
Brendan Jones’ infield single with two outs in the ninth scored Jesus Rodriguez from second base to give New York a walk-off win over visiting Philadelphia in Tampa.
New York’s T.J. Rumfield knocked a two-run homer to forge a 5-5 tie in the ninth to set up Jones’ heroics. Ben Rice and J.C. Escarra also homered for the Yankees. Carlos Carrasco fanned six during his 3 1/3 innings and gave up just two hits and one run. Matt Keating (1-0) got the final out in the ninth to claim the win.
Cal Stevenson drove in three runs for the Phillies, highlighted by a two-run homer in the seventh. Max Kepler and Christian Arroyo produced two hits each. Taijuan Walker allowed four hits and two runs over four innings. Guillo Zuniga (0-1) gave up three runs in the ninth to take the loss.
Rangers (ss) 5, Rockies 0
Jon Gray fired three shutout innings as a Texas split squad blanked visiting Colorado in Surprise, Ariz.
Gray (3-0) yielded four hits and no walks while striking out two. Adrian Houser (2 2/3 innings), Joe Barlow (1 1/3 innings), Mark Church (one inning) and Jesse Chavez (one inning) completed the shutout.
Adolis Garcia’s three-run homer in the first inning off Rockies starter Ryan Feltner (2-1) was all the offense Texas needed. Feltner was tagged for five runs on two hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Padres 9, Rangers (ss) 8
Luis Arraez homered among his three hits as host San Diego edged a Texas split squad in Peoria, Ariz.
Forrest Wall, Xander Bogaerts and Jason Heyward each knocked in two runs for the Padres. Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth had two hits apiece. Harold Chirino (1-0) fired two scoreless innings for the win.
Kevin Pillar had two hits and two RBIs, and Sam Haggerty also drove in two runs. Evan Carter went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Matt Festa (0-1) yielded three runs on three hits in his lone inning.
