WNCAAB: Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 19 Tennessee downs No. 5 UConn

Zee Spearman scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and No. 19 Tennessee held off No. 5 UConn for an 80-76 nonconference victory Thursday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Samara Spencer had 14 points, Jewel Spear provided 12 points and Talaysia Cooper notched 11 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Volunteers (17-5), who had lost three times on their home court this season.

Sarah Strong’s 18 points and Paige Bueckers’ 14 points led the Huskies (21-3), who had an 11-game winning streak end. Bueckers shot 5-for-16 from the floor. Bueckers tied the game at 74-all with a 3-pointer with 2:08 left, but Spearman’s bucket on the next possession gave the Vols the lead back. Spearman also scored the game’s final points with 12 seconds to play.

Tennessee scored the last five points of the first half to close within 39-37, and it took the lead with a 22-15 scoring advantage in the third period.

No. 2 South Carolina 74, Georgia 42

MiLaysia Fulwiley’s 13 points and Tessa Johnson’s 12 points aided the visiting Gamecocks’ abundant bench scoring to beat the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.

Chloe Kitts added 11 points for the Gamecocks (22-1, 10-0 Southeastern Conference), who led 33-15 at halftime. South Carolina shot 45.9 percent from the field and enjoyed a 47-28 rebounding advantage.

Asia Avinger and reserve Roxane Makolo each had nine points for Georgia (9-15, 1-9), which finished 1-for-12 on 3-pointers.

No. 3 Notre Dame 96, Stanford 47

Hannah Hidalgo scored 24 points and Olivia Miles added 20 as the Irish rolled past visiting Stanford for a lopsided victory in South Bend, Ind.

Hidalgo also had five assists and three steals, while Miles chipped in seven rebounds and four assists in the 15th straight win for the Irish (20-2, 11-0 ACC). Cassandre Prosper and Maddy Westbeld each added 13 points. Tess Heal paced Stanford (11-11, 3-8) with 10 points.

Notre Dame never trailed and led by 52 points while shooting 55.4 percent from the floor and 52.9 percent from behind the arc. Stanford had a season-high 29 turnovers.

No. 4 Texas 87, No. 24 Vanderbilt 66

Madison Booker scored 20 points as the Longhorns raced away from the visiting Commodores in Austin, Texas.

Booker also contributed six rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the seventh straight win for Texas (23-2, 9-1 SEC). Shay Holle added 16 points, Taylor Jones scored 13, and Jordan Lee chipped in 12 off the bench.

Vanderbilt (18-6, 5-5) lost a second straight game despite getting 26 points from Khamil Pierre and 22 points from Mikayla Blakes.

No. 6 LSU 71, Missouri 60

Flau’Jae Johnson’s 19 points and Mikaylah Williams’ 16 points carried LSU (24-1, 9-1 SEC) to the victory in Columbia, Mo.

Johnson and Williams both bagged three 3-pointers and Aneesah Morrow finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Grace Slaughter tallied 18 points and Ashton Judd, who made four 3-pointers, notched 17 points for Missouri, which shot 40.4 percent from the field. Laniah Randle added 15 points for Missouri (12-13, 1-9), which was outscored 20-12 in each of the second and third quarters.

No. 10 Duke 74, Clemson 55

Toby Fournier scored 20 points off the bench and the Blue Devils’ defense did solid work in a bounce-back victory over the Tigers in Durham, N.C.

Ashlon Jackson’s 15 points, Oluchi Okananwa’s 14 and Reigan Richardson’s 12 helped Duke (18-5, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) recover from Monday night’s loss at No. 14 North Carolina State. Jackson had three of the Blue Devils’ seven 3-point baskets.

Maddi Cluse tallied 19 points for Clemson (11-12, 4-8), which shot 50 percent from the field but committed 27 turnovers. Anya Poole had 11 points.

No. 15 Oklahoma 66, Mississippi 56

Payton Verhulst’s 19 points and 10 rebounds carried the Sooners (17-6, 5-5 SEC), who outscored the Rebels by 21-0 from beyond the arc in Oxford, Miss.

Sahara Williams had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Liz Scott notched 10 points for Oklahoma.

Starr Jacobs racked up 15 points to lead Ole Miss (15-7, 6-4). Madison Scott’s 12 points and Christeen Iwuala’s 11 points helped the Rebels, who were 0-for-12 on 3-point shots. Ole Miss was 12-for-20 on free throws.

No. 16 Maryland 79, Oregon 61

Sarah Te-Biasu scored a season-high 26 points as the Terps notched a road win over the Ducks in Eugene, Ore.

Te-Biasu shot 9 of 11 and picked up the slack for Maryland (18-5, 8-4 Big Ten) as star guard Shyanne Sellers, who has dealt with injuries this season, was held scoreless in 23 minutes. Kaylene Smikle shined with 21 points, and Saylor Poffenbarger added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

For Oregon (16-7, 7-5), star guard Deja Kelly struggled, going 0-for-5 from the field and scoring just two points. Ehis Etute scored 14 and Ari Long added 11.

No. 17 Georgia Tech 70, SMU 69

Zoesha Smith made two free throws in the final two seconds and the Yellow Jackets survived a final sequence in Atlanta. The Mustangs’ Nya Robertson missed one of two free throws with a chance to tie after a foul inside the last second.

Kara Dunn had 15 points to pace Georgia Tech, while Tonie Morgan’s 14 points, Chazadi Wright’s 12 and Smith’s 11 were key for the Yellow Jackets (19-4, 7-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).

TK Pitts scored 19 points to lead all five SMU starters in double figures. Robertson, Jessica Peterson and Zanai Jones all had 12 points, and Kaysia Woods added 11. The Mustangs (10-14, 2-10) shot 39.7 percent.

Louisville 70, No. 21 Cal 63

Olivia Cochran had 18 points and nine rebounds as the Cardinals upset the visiting Golden Bears in Louisville, Ky.

Imari Berry added 14 points for Louisville (16-7, 9-3 ACC) in its 10th win in its last 12 games. Ja’Leah Williams chipped in 11 points. The Cardinals are now 2-6 against AP-ranked opponents this season.

Cal (19-5, 7-4), which fell for the second time in three games, had five players score in double figures. Ugonne Onyiah led the way with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 22 Florida State 101, Virginia 68

Ta’Niya Latson pumped in 27 points and dished 12 assists, Makayla Timpson added 18 points and eight rebounds and O’Mariah Gordon scored 15 points to lead the Seminoles to a road victory over the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va.

Florida State (19-4, 9-2 ACC) broke out to a 26-9 lead after the first quarter on the way to a 49-31 halftime lead. A 34-12 advantage in the third quarter turned it into a rout.

Kymora Johnson and Paris Clark both had 16 points and Breona Hurd posted 15 points for Virginia (12-12, 4-8), which collected 21 of its 49 boards on the offensive glass. The Cavaliers went 8-for-18 on free throws.

No. 23 Alabama 84, Florida 66

Aaliyah Nye poured in 27 points and the Crimson Tide benefitted from a strong fourth quarter in Gainesville, Fla.

Sarah Ashlee Barker’s 18 points and 10 rebounds, Essence Cody’s 16 points and Zaay Green’s 15 were critical for Alabama (19-5, 6-4 SEC), which outscored Florida 28-16 in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide shot 51.6 percent from the floor.

Liv McGill’s 22 points, Ra Shaya Kyle’s 15 and Laila Reynolds’ 14 weren’t enough for the Gators (12-12, 3-7) to keep up. They shot 4-for-19 on 3-pointers.
