The New England Revolution acquired center back Mamadou Fofana from France’s Ligue 2 side Amiens SC.

The club, in an announcement on Tuesday, said Fofana is under contract through 2027 with a team option for 2028.

The Revolution finalized the deal using targeted allocation money.

“Mamadou’s physicality, distribution and soccer intelligence will benefit us in a position of need as we work to improve our defensive performance,” sporting director Curt Onalfo said in a statement.

From Mali, Fofana has made 238 professional appearances across the top two divisions in France and Turkey. He added 44 appearances for Mali’s national team, which reached the quarterfinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Mamadou is an excellent fit for the profile we were looking for at central defender, bringing size and athleticism, composure on ball, and a strong mentality to not concede goals,” head coach Caleb Porter said.

“Our performance and results need to improve defensively, and Fofana’s talent and experience will help bolster our backline for the 2025 season.”

New England will be looking to the 26-year-old Fofana to help improve a defense that allowed 74 goals — third most in MLS history — in 2024.

The Revolution finished 9-21-4 (31 points) and in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, missing the playoffs.
