NFL: Chargers gain control early, take down Browns

Justin Herbert passed for 250 of his 282 yards in the first half to help the Los Angeles Chargers cruise to a 27-10 victory over the host Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Quentin Johnston caught four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown and Josh Palmer also had a scoring reception for the Chargers (5-3), who won for the third time in four games. J.K. Dobbins rushed for 85 yards and two scores on 14 carries for Los Angeles.

Jameis Winston struggled in his second start for Cleveland as he was intercepted three times while completing 26 of 46 passes for 235 yards and one touchdown. It marked the 13th time Winston has thrown three or more picks in a regular-season game.

Myles Garrett had three sacks and Cedric Tillman had a touchdown reception for the Browns (2-7), who lost for the sixth time in their past seven games.

Elijah Molden, Alohi Gilman and Tarheeb Still had interceptions for Los Angeles, while Tuli Tuipulotu had 2.5 sacks and Morgan Fox had two. Molden’s third-quarter interception came in the end zone after Winston’s pass was deflected by Still.

Cleveland attempted to cut into its 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit by calling on Dustin Hopkins for a 51-yard field-goal attempt, but his kick was low and hit Los Angeles’ Teair Tart hit in the chest. The Chargers took possession at the Cleveland 46-yard line with 6:30 left in the game.

Four plays later, Dobbins scored on a 7-yard run to make it 27-3 with 4:16 left.

Winston tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tillman with 44 seconds left.

The Chargers controlled the first half while taking a 20-3 lead at the break. Los Angeles had a 256-57 edge in total offense in the half.

Herbert hit a wide-open Palmer on a 28-yard throw for the first score of the game with 6:49 left in the opening quarter.

Hopkins booted a 38-yard field goal to get the Browns on the board with 9:30 left in the half.

The Chargers answered as Johnson was uncovered down the right sideline and Herbert hit him for a 66-yard score to make it 13-3 with 8:01 to go in the half. Cameron Dicker missed the extra point.

Dobbins tacked on a 16-yard scoring run with 3:30 left, and Dicker made the kick.
