NCAAF: Top 25 roundup: No. 4 Ohio State holds off No. 3 Penn State

A goal-line stand late in the game helped No. 4 Ohio State record a 20-13 win over No. 3 Penn State on Saturday afternoon in State College, Pa.

The Buckeyes (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) have defeated the Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-1) eight straight times since 2016.

Trailing 20-13, Penn State had a first-and-goal from the 3. Three runs produced only two yards, however, and a pass intended to Khalil Dinkins was incomplete with 5:13 left in the game.

The Buckeyes ran out the clock with quarterback Will Howard, a Pennsylvania native, rushing for seven yards on a third-and-3 from the Penn State 47 with 30 seconds left. He took a knee to end the game. Ohio State (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) has defeated the Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-1) eight straight times since 2016.

Howard was 16 of 24 for 182 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Quinshon Judkins ran for 95 yards. Penn State’s Drew Allar was 12 of 20 for 146 yards and an interception.

No. 1 Oregon 38, Michigan 17

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for a touchdown and ran for another and Jordan James rushed for a touchdown as part of his 117 yards, leading the Ducks over the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Noah Whittington added two rushing touchdowns for the Ducks (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten), as Oregon built an 18-point lead at halftime and remained in control in the second half. The Ducks lost top wide receiver Tez Johnson to an upper-body injury early in the game, and a fumble on special teams led to Michigan’s first touchdown. But Oregon overcame those and dominated on both sides of the ball.

Davis Warren was 13-of-23 for 165 yards with two touchdown passes for Michigan (5-4, 3-3). His 6-yard touchdown pass to Peyton O’Leary on third-and-goal midway through the third quarter made it 28-17.

No 2 Georgia 34, Florida 20

Carson Beck completed 25 of 40 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing three interceptions as the Bulldogs beat the Gators in Jacksonville, Fla.

Nate Frazier ran for a team-high 82 yards and a touchdown, while Dominic Lovett caught seven passes for 52 yards and a score, as the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 SEC) won their fourth straight.

Florida (4-4, 2-3) lost quarterback DJ Lagway to a hamstring injury in the second quarter. Lagway completed 2 of 6 passes for 47 yards and a score before backup Aidan Warner came in, completing 7 of 22 passes for 66 yards and an interception. Ja’Kobi Jackson led the Gators with 12 carries for 74 yards and a score.

No. 5 Miami 53, Duke 31

Cam Ward passed for 400 yards and five touchdowns as the fifth-ranked Hurricanes remained undefeated, rallying to beat the visiting Blue Devils in an ACC matchup in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Hurricanes, who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring average (46.8), exceeded that total as they rallied from an 11-point third-quarter deficit. Hurricanes wide receiver Xavier Restrepo had eight catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns. On his third TD, he broke Miami’s career record for catches and receiving yards.

Miami (9-0, 5-0 ACC) got the best of Duke coach Manny Diaz, who spent six years with the Hurricanes, including three as their head coach. Duke (6-3, 2-3) was led by running back Peyton Jones, who scored one rushing touchdown and one receiving TD in totaling 132 yards from scrimmage (71 rushing, 61 receiving.

No. 7 Tennessee 28, Kentucky 18

Dylan Sampson ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns, setting Tennessee’s single-season mark for rushing scores, to help the Volunteers beat the Wildcats in Knoxville, Tenn.

Nico Iamaleava completed 28 of 38 passes for 292 yards and one touchdown as the Volunteers (7-1, 4-1 SEC) won their third straight game. Miles Kitselman caught six passes for 97 yards and a touchdown and Peyton Lewis added a rushing score. Sampson, who finished with 27 carries, established the mark with his 19th rushing touchdown of the season with 4:55 left in the game.

The Wildcats (3-6, 1-6) lost their fourth straight game. Kentucky’s Brock Vandagriff completed 10 of 17 passes for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception before leaving in the third quarter. He was injured while being sacked. Jamarion Wilcox rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries for the Wildcats.

South Carolina 44, No. 10 Texas A&M 20

Raheim Sanders rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 92 yards on five receptions in Columbia, S.C., as the Gamecocks handed the Longhorns their first Southeastern Conference loss.

Sanders snapped a 20-20 tie with 9:19 left in the third quarter, zipping 52 yards as the Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3) went ahead for good. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers added the clinching touchdown on a short pass to tight end Joshua Simon, who ran 57 yards, with 3:24 remaining in the game. Sellers completed 13 of 27 passes for 244 yards and two scores while adding 106 yards and a touchdown on 15 rushes.

Marcel Reed threw for 206 yards on 18-of-28 passing with a touchdown and an interception for the Aggies (7-2, 5-1), who had a seven-game win streak snapped.

Texas Tech 23, No. 11 Iowa State 22

The Red Raiders defeated the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, after a fourth-quarter comeback orchestrated by quarterback Behren Morton.

Tahj Brooks crossed the goal line on the game-winning touchdown for Texas Tech (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) with 19 seconds remaining to cap a 12-play, 71-yard drive. With Morton lined up as a receiver on second-and-goal, Brooks caught a direct snap and ran into the right side of the end zone.

Iowa State (7-1, 4-1), undefeated and averaging 25.1 penalty yards per game entering the day, was dealt its first loss, committing eight penalties for 59 yards in the process.

Louisville 33, No. 11 Clemson 21

Isaac Brown rushed for 151 yards, including a game-sealing 45-yard touchdown burst with 5:50 to play, as the Cardinals went to Clemson and stunned the Tigers.

Tyler Shough threw for 156 yards for Louisville (6-3, 4-2 ACC). Shough and Keyjuan Brown had touchdown runs in the first half.

Phil Mafah rushed 30 times for 171 yards for Clemson (6-2, 5-1), which outgained the visitors 450-366 in total yards and dominated in time of possession 37:52 to 22:08.

No. 13 Indiana 47, Michigan State 10

Kurtis Rourke went 19-of-29 passing for 263 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hoosiers over the Spartans in the Big Ten matchup in East Lansing, Mich.

Rourke returned after missing last week’s win over Washington with a thumb injury and helped keep hopes of a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff berth alive for Indiana (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten). Indiana also reclaimed the Old Brass Spittoon, the trophy that’s at stake when these teams face each other.

Aidan Chiles went 16-of-24 passing for 193 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Michigan State (4-5, 2-4). Michigan State led 10-0 after the first quarter but then couldn’t stop Indiana’s run of 47 unanswered points.

Houston 24, No. 17 Kansas State 19

Zeon Chriss scored a 41-yard touchdown run with 2:31 left to lift the Cougars to an upset of the Wildcats in a driving rainstorm in Houston.

Avery Johnson finished 23-of-39 for 238 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Wildcats (7-2, 4-2 Big 12).

Chriss was a perfect 11-of-11 for the Cougars (4-5, 3-3 Big 12) while also running for 75 yards and the winning score.

No. 20 SMU 48, No. 18 Pittsburgh 25

Kevin Jennings threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs crushed the Panthers in Dallas.

Jennings completed 17 of 25 passes as SMU (8-1, 5-0 ACC) joined No. 5 Miami atop the conference standings while handing Pittsburgh (7-1, 3-1) its first defeat. The result was never in doubt after SMU scored 24 points in the second quarter to take a 31-3 halftime lead.

Eli Holstein hit 29 of 47 attempts for 248 yards with an interception for Pittsburgh, which could fall out of the Top 25 after the lopsided loss. The Panthers yielded a season-high 467 yards, turned it over twice and committed six penalties for 66 yards.

No. 19 Ole Miss 63, Arkansas 31

Jaxson Dart passed for 515 yards and six touchdowns and Jordan Watkins had a career receiving day, lifting the Rebels over the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark.

Dart completed 25 of 31 passes and rushed for 47 yards for Ole Miss (7-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) as it snapped a five-game winning streak by the home team in the series. Five of his TD passes went to Watkins, a senior wide receiver who set a career high in TDs and receiving yards (254) on eight receptions.

Injured early, Taylen Green finished 10 of 14 for 158 yards for Arkansas (5-4, 3-3). Backup Malachi Singleton was 11 for 14 for 207 yards with one touchdown pass to Luke Hasz. Andrew Armstrong had 135 yards on six catches.

No. 21 Army 20, Air Force 3

Kanye Udoh scored a pair of touchdowns and rumbled for 128 of his career-high 158 yards in the second half as the Black Knights withstood the absence of star quarterback Bryson Daily and shined defensively in a victory over the visiting Falcons in West Point, N.Y.

In its first Commander-In-Chief game of the season, Army (8-0) won its 12th straight game overall after learning Daily was unavailable due to an undisclosed illness/injury that is not expected to be season-ending.

Air Force (1-7), which lost last year’s meeting 23-3, fell to 0-2 in Commander-In-Chief’s trophy games and dropped its seventh straight game.

Minnesota 25, No. 24 Illinois 17

Max Brosmer threw a go-ahead, 1-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Geers with 5:14 left in the fourth quarter, then the Golden Gophers held on to upset the Fighting Illini in Champaign, Ill.

Brosmer completed 22 of 37 passes for 213 yards for Minnesota (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten), which earned its fourth straight win and became bowl eligible. Darius Taylor had 22 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Luke Altmyer completed 20 of 33 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown for Illinois (6-3, 3-3), which has lost back-to-back games. Josh McCray had 72 rushing yards and a touchdown and Zakhari Franklin had five catches for 71 yards and a score.
