The Detroit Red Wings placed veteran defenseman Justin Holl on waivers Sunday, according to media reports.

Holl, 32, played in only 38 games last season after signing a three-year contract with an annual average value of $3.4 million in July 2023 after spending his first six seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Holl has two years remaining on his deal.

Detroit began last season with an almost even rotation of seven defensemen for the standard six-defenseman rotation for each game and activated the seventh defenseman for some contests. But as the season wore on, Holl became the odd man out. A defensive-minded rearguard, Holl had five assists and was plus-8 during the campaign.

If Holl is not claimed, he will be sent to the Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

He has 87 points (11 goals and 76 assists) in 323 NHL games in six seasons with Toronto and one in Detroit. He was drafted in the second round (54th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.
