CFL: Pressure on Stampeders to end 6-game winless streak vs. Lions

Calgary Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson is getting hot under the collar while his team is going cold on the gridiron.

With his job reportedly in jeopardy, Dickenson hopes to help the skidding Stampeders (4-9-1) snap a six-game winless skid on Friday when they visit the BC Lions (7-8) in Vancouver.

“What do you want me to say about that?” said Dickenson, who has served as head coach in Calgary since 2016. “I’m (expletive) here to work, so I really don’t give a damn. I’m here to work. Speculate all you want, I’m here to work.”

The Stampeders, who are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004, fell to 0-5-1 in their last six games overall with a 37-29 setback to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sept. 20. They will try to record their first victory away from home this season after losing their initial six road contests.

Calgary was victorious in its home matchup against BC on July 21. Jake Maier completed 25 of 32 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns in the Stampeders’ 25-24 victory over the Lions.

BC is looking to rebound from its second straight defeat, and last Friday’s setback was a doozy. The Lions squandered a 16-0 lead at halftime in a 32-29 overtime loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“We don’t respond well when things don’t go our way. We’re good when things are humming along … but when something goes wrong, the other team makes a play or we think a call’s bad … we don’t respond quickly enough,” Lions coach Rick Campbell said. “We need to be better at that and not be fazed by a game where it gets tough at the end.”

Nathan Rourke threw for 264 yards and rushed for 30 more and two touchdowns for the Lions.
