Kyle Harrison threw six strong innings, Tyler Fitzgerald doubled and scored in a four-run fifth and the San Francisco Giants opened a three-game home series against the Chicago White Sox with a 5-3 victory Monday night.

Matt Chapman homered for the Giants, who won a second straight in their effort to climb the ladder in the National League wild-card race.

Winless in his three previous August starts, Harrison (7-5) limited the White Sox to one run and five hits. He walked two and struck out five.

The rookie pitched out of no-out jams in the third with the bases loaded and the fourth with two aboard, retaining a scoreless tie in an early pitchers’ duel with Chicago’s Jonathan Cannon (2-7).

The White Sox were finally able to break through for the game’s first run when Luis Robert Jr. singled home Brooks Baldwin with two outs in the fifth.

The Giants then responded with their big inning, ignited by consecutive one-out singles by Thairo Estrada and Grant McCray.

Curt Casali tied the game with a single, Fitzgerald gave the Giants the lead with his double, LaMonte Wade Jr. made it 3-1 with an infield single and Fitzgerald scampered home on Heliot Ramos’ sacrifice fly, capping the uprising.

Chapman’s homer, his 20th, led off the sixth and completed the Giants’ scoring.

Cannon was pulled after finishing the sixth, charged with five runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out four.

Seeking to end a two-game losing streak, the White Sox got within 5-3 on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Vargas and an RBI single by Gavin Sheets in the eighth. However, Tyler Rogers got pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi to ground out with the potential tying runs aboard to retain the two-run margin.

The White Sox also got two aboard in the ninth before Jordan Hicks recorded the final two outs on flyballs to lock down his first save of the season.

Chapman, Casali, Wade and Michael Conforto had two hits apiece for the Giants, who out-hit the visitors 12-11.

Robert collected three singles, while Baldwin, Korey Lee and Dominic Fletcher had two hits each for Chicago.
