The Los Angeles Dodgers held first baseman Freddie Freeman out of the lineup Sunday against the host St. Louis Cardinals after he suffered a finger injury in Saturday’s 5-2 loss.

Freeman left Saturday’s game in the sixth inning after he jammed his right middle finger while trying to make a play in the field. Per Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Freeman’s finger swelled and became more painful Sunday, and he will undergo a CT scan when the team returns to Los Angeles.

However, Roberts maintained that the team’s level of concern about Freeman missing extended time remains low.

Freeman, 34, was named to his eighth All-Star Game last month and is batting .292 with 17 homers and 72 RBIs over 116 games this year. He recently missed eight games to be with his family while his 3-year-old son recovered from a severe case of Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Roberts also told reporters before Sunday’s game that pitcher Brusdar Graterol, currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, is expected to throw a bullpen session this week.

Los Angeles also selected the contract of right-hander Ben Casparius and designated right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. for assignment.

Casparius, 25, has yet to make his major league debut. In 18 starts between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa this season, he has gone 5-4 with a 3.48 ERA.

Honeywell, 29, pitched in 10 games and made one start for the Dodgers this season after they selected him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates in July. He went 0-1 with a 2.21 ERA over 20 1/3 innings of work for the Dodgers. In 55 career games (three starts) for five clubs since 2021, Honeywell is 2-5 with a 4.26 ERA.
