The Chicago Red Stars placed defender Sam Staab on the season-ending injury list Thursday with a torn Achilles tendon.

Staab, 27, sustained the injury during Saturday’s 0-0 shootout loss against NJ/NY Gotham FC.

“We are disheartened to learn the extent of Sam’s injury,” Red Stars general manager Richard Feuz said. “Over her short time with the club, Sam has fully committed herself to her teammates and been a wonderful leader on and off the pitch. As Sam begins the recovery process, we will ensure that we provide the support she needs so she can rest and focus on her health.”

Staab had started all 16 matches in her debut season with Chicago, contributing one goal and two assists.

She played collegiately at Clemson (2015-18) before launching her pro career with the NWSL’s Washington Spirit (2019-23).
