Ted Scott, the caddie for World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, is fighting through a stomach illness at the Open Championship.

Scott was seen lying down on the ground at various points during Scheffler’s round in the Friday morning wave at Royal Troon in Scotland. The broadcast announcers covering Scheffler’s group reported that Scott was feeling “really sick.”

Scheffler revealed after the round that Scott had a stomach issue of some kind.

“He had a bit of food poisoning (Thursday) night — well, could have been food poisoning, could be some sort of stomach bug,” Scheffler said. “But he seemed to feel better as the day went on. The doc here took good care of him. But he did not sleep very much last night apparently.

“We didn’t know if he was going to be able to go this morning, but he fought it out. You saw him laying down probably quite a bit out there, which was pretty funny.”

With his caddie hindered, Scheffler still shot a 1-under-par 70 with three birdies and two bogeys, moving to 2 under for the championship, five strokes behind leader Shane Lowry of Ireland.

“It’s just one of those deals, you’re used to him being in one position, standing there by the bag, and then all of a sudden on No. 9 today he was literally sitting on the 10th tee for like 10 minutes while we were putting out over there,” Scheffler said. “I didn’t even see him, which was a bit unusual.

“He’s a fighter. He did a good job today and battled through it.”

Scott previously was the full-time caddie for Bubba Watson. He has been on the bag for four Masters victories in his career — two by Watson (2012, 2014), two by Scheffler (2022, 2024).
