WTA: WTA roundup: Ons Jabeur wins rain-delayed Berlin opener

No. 8 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia won her rain-delayed first-round match at the ecotrans Ladies Open in Berlin on Wednesday, finishing a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang.

Jabeur, the tournament champion in 2022, converted five of seven break points and advanced to face Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in the second round.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey. The match between No. 6 seed Qinwen Zheng of China and Czech Katerina Siniakova was interrupted by rain with Siniakova leading 5-3.

Rothesay Classic

No. 6 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic to reach the quarterfinals in Birmingham, England.

Fernandez will next face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, who also came from behind for a 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4 win against Zhu Lin of China.

No. 7 seed Anastasia Potapova of Russia eliminated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 7-5, while Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto took down Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-2.
