WTA: WTA roundup: Elisabetta Cocciaretto stuns Jelena Ostapenko in Birmingham

Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto upset reigning champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Rothesay Classic on Monday at Birmingham, England.

Cocciaretto saved eight of nine break points while stunning the top-seeded Ostapenko. Cocciaretto will next face Sloane Stephens, who was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over China’s Yuan Yue.

China’s Zhu Lin posted a 7-6 (2), 6-2 upset of third-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania, while sixth-seeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

No. 7 Anastasia Potapova notched a 6-4, 6-4 victory over fellow Russian Elina Avanesyan. Also recording first-round wins were Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic and Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti.

Fifth-seeded Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rebeka Masarova of Spain in the opening round at Berlin.

Vondrousova was the lone seeded player in action on Monday. She saved four of five break points and scored winners on 74.3 percent of her first-serve points.

Russia’s Daria Kasatkina rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic defeated Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-3. Also winning Monday were Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya and Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez.
