The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran tight end Logan Thomas, according to multiple media reports Monday.

Thomas, 32, played the last four seasons for the Washington Commanders, where he started 15 of 16 games last year and caught 55 passes for 496 yards and four touchdowns.

His best season was 2020, when he started 15 of 16 games and made 72 receptions for 670 yards and six TDs — all career highs.

Thomas is a converted quarterback, the position he played as a rookie with the Arizona Cardinals, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech.

He played tight end for the Buffalo Bills (2017-18) and Detroit Lions (2019). Thomas also spent time at a tight end on the practice squads of the Miami Dolphins (2015-16), New York Giants (2016) and Lions (2016).

He settled in as a starter with Washington when not sidelined by injuries. The Commanders released him on March 1 in a cost-cutting move.

San Francisco has been looking for a backup for two-time All-Pro George Kittle — a five-time Pro Bowl selection — after losing Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley in free agency, both to the Atlanta Falcons. The 49ers signed Detroit tight end Brock Wright to a restricted free agent offer sheet, but the Lions matched it in March.

The team drafted tight ends Brayden Willis and Cameron Latu in 2023, but Latu (knee) spent the season on injured reserve and Willis didn’t record a catch in seven games.
