NWSL: Spirit’s 4-goal first half sends Angel City to defeat

Trinity Rodman scored two of Washington’s four goals in the first 36 minutes as the host Spirit beat Angel City 4-2 on Saturday night.

Casey Krueger and Ouleymata Sarr also scored for the Spirit (7-3-0, 21 points), who won for the third time in four matches this month. Croix Bethune provided two assists.

Sydney Leroux had a goal for Angel City (3-5-1, 10 points), which also benefited from Annaig Butel’s own goal. Claire Emslie assisted on Leroux’s tally.

There was an offensive rush in the first half. During a 27-minute stretch, the teams combined for all six goals in the match. Washington had three goals in about a six-minute span.

Goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury had two saves for the Spirit. Angel City’s Didi Haracic made three saves.

This was the first time the Spirit played at home since April 26, and they put on a show.

Rodman, who had scored only one goal this season entering the match, posted the first goal in the ninth minute. Sarr assisted on the play.

Rodman tied the match at 2-2 in the 30th minute, with Bethune picking up her first assist of the night. For both Rodman goals, she set up in front of the net and was ready to convert.

Krueger’s first goal of the season and Sarr’s fourth goal this year came just a couple of minutes apart. Sarr was set up by Bethune, who possessed the ball from midfield until approaching the box, and then slipping a pass to Sarr.

Angel City has lost three of its past four matches.
