Oakland Athletics outfielder/designated hitter Brent Rooker was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday due to an injury that he sustained on Sunday.

Rooker is dealing with a costochondral rib cartilage injury. He was hurt in the game against the Detroit Tigers on a checked swing and has missed the last three games, including Thursday’s 1-0 road win over the Texas Rangers.

Rooker, 29, is batting .200 with two homers, five RBIs and 16 strikeouts in 30 at-bats over eight games this season.

Last season, Rooker was a surprise power source with 30 homers and 69 RBIs in 137 games. He batted .246 and made the American League All-Star roster.

Oakland recalled utility man Max Schuemann from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the roster opening. The 26-year-old was batting .174 in six games at Las Vegas.
Schuemann hasn’t played in a major league game.

Right-hander Luis Medina (right knee sprain) was moved to the 60-day IL to open a 40-man roster spot for Schuemann. Medina was injured on March 4.
