Detroit Mercy will name Michigan State assistant Mark Montgomery as its new men’s basketball coach, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

Montgomery, 54, previously was the head coach at Northern Illinois from 2011-21.

He is set to replace Mike Davis, who parted ways with the Titans last month after a 1-31 season. He had a 60-119 overall record in six seasons there.

Montgomery played at Michigan State from 1988-92 and got his first coaching job in 1997 as an assistant at Central Michigan. He was an assistant to Tom Izzo with the Spartans from 2002-11 before taking over at Northern Illinois, where he posted a 126-179 record in 10 seasons.

He returned to the Michigan State staff after being fired by Northern Illinois.
