Taylor Ward hit his second home run in two days, Reid Detmers pitched five strong innings and the visiting Los Angeles Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 on Sunday to avert being swept in the three-game opening series.

Detmers (1-0) allowed a run on two hits. He struck out seven and walked three. Jose Soriano followed with three scoreless innings of relief and Carlos Estevez worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season.

After scoring 11 and 13 runs in their first two games, the Orioles were held in check. Baltimore collected three hits and five walks and left eight men on base.

Tyler Wells (0-1) tossed six innings for Baltimore, allowing four runs — three earned — on five hits. He struck out seven without a walk. After struggling early, Wells retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Nolan Schanuel singled off Wells with one out in the first. After Mike Trout flied out, Ward hit a shot to left off an 0-1 fastball to make it 2-0.

Luis Rengifo and Logan O’Hoppe singled leading off the Los Angeles second. With one out, Zach Neto singled to left, scoring Rengifo. O’Hoppe advanced to third when Anthony Rendon flied out and he scored on catcher James McCann’s throwing error to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Orioles scored in the second. Jordan Westburg walked with one out and Cedric Mullins was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Jorge Mateo singled to load the bases and Gunnar Henderson walked, forcing in a run.

Baltimore did not get another hit until the seventh. The Orioles put runners on first and second with a one-out single and a walk, but Henderson grounded into a force out and Adley Rutschman lined out.

Ryan Mountcastle reached on an error by Soriano covering first base to open the eighth, but Anthony Santander lined into a double play.
