Jake Guentzel scored the only goal of a shootout and the visiting Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Saturday night.

Sebastian Aho scored at 18:28 and 19:53 of the third period to tie the score for the Hurricanes.

Toronto failed to score on a power play during overtime.

John Tavares had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs. William Nylander, Nicholas Robertson and David Kampf also scored for the Maple Leafs. Morgan Rielly added two assists. Ilya Samsonov made 36 saves.

Jordan Martinook and Seth Jarvis scored the other goals for the Hurricanes, who have won five of six. Guentzel and Brent Burns added two assists. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 36 shots.

Carolina won the first game between the teams this season, 3-2 in Toronto on Dec. 30.

Toronto led 4-2 when Kampf scored his sixth goal of the season at 2:55 of the third period on a breakaway after a turnover. The goal came after Carolina pressed the play with Jalen Chatfield’s shot ringing off the crossbar.

The Hurricanes removed the goaltender for an extra attacker with more than three minutes left. They went on a power play soon after and Aho scored his 26th goal of the season before adding his 27th in the final seconds.

Tavares gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with his 21st goal of the season at 4:47 of the second period. The goal came on the transition after a Hurricanes turnover at the Toronto blue line. TJ Brodie got the assist.

Another Carolina turnover set up a breakaway that led to Nylander’s 36th goal of the season at 6:27.

The Maple Leafs took advantage of another turnover to take a 3-0 lead on Robertson’s ninth goal of the season at 12:03 of the second.

The Hurricanes came back with Martinook’s 12th goal of the season at 13:27. He knocked in a loose puck at the edge of the crease after a shot by Burns.

Jarvis backhanded a rebound off a shot by Guentzel for his 22nd goal of the season at 19:57 during a power play. Jake McCabe was off for tripping.

The Maple Leafs were without Mitchell Marner (ankle) and Calle Jarnkrok (hand).

Carolina was without Jack Drury and Teuvo Teravainen, both due to lower-body injuries.
